Pescennius Niger. A.D. 193-194. AR denarius. 2.64 gm. 17 mm. Antioch mint. His laureate head right; [IMP CAES C PESC] NIGE(?) IVST AVG (or similar) / Spes advancing left, holding flower and raising hem of skirt; BONAE SPEI. RIC IV.1 3 var. (obverse legend). RSC 4 ff. var. (same). Fine; light roughness. Very rare.
Pescennius Niger was declared emperor by his troops after the murder of Pertinax. Septimius Severus, after consolidating his own forces and taking Rome, marched upon Niger and defeated him three times. After a fourth and final defeat at Issus, Niger fled toward Parthia but was overtaken and executed.
