The die used for the obverse of this coin dates to the period post-circa AD 50 when Claudius began to be referred on his coinage as Pater Patriae, however, the corresponding "P P" which is almost ubiquitous in the reverse legends of these civic crown issues after this date is not present here. The reverse die used here instead dates to the earlier period of Claudius' reign, before he was commonly termed Pater Patriae on the coinage - possibly dating this coin thusly to an early period when this epithet was just beginning to be used on the civic crown issues but the reverse legend hadn't been standardised, or when the old reverse dies were still too fresh to throw away.
