LYDIA. Philadelphia. Tiberius, 14-37. (Bronze, 15.2 mm, 3.31 g, 12 h). ΤΙΒΕΡΙΟΝ CΕΒΑCΤΟΝ Bare head of Tiberius to right. Rev. NEOKECΣAPEIΣ Winged thunderbolt. Clark 2 (01/r2 t this coin). RPC 3017.7,9, 16. Rare. Well-centered and with a dark patina. With deposits and roughness as found. Good fine.
From the Jared J Clark Collection.

Clark's study in NC 180 has confirmed the identity of RPC 3017 as the emperor Tiberius and not Tiberius Gemellus.

This identity has been established from both a newly discovered obverse die and from the reexamination of a previously known one. The obverse legend on the new die reads TIBERION ΣEBAΣTON, while that on the previously known one had an uncertain legend with a garbled spelling of CEBACTON. This spelling included 2 combined lunate sigmas, a conventional epsilon and beta, a combined alpha and sigma, an upside down tau, a conventional omicron, and an inverted nu. There are now at least four confirmed spellings for the city name based on four of the seven reverse dies. The present example, struck from R2, has the legend NEOKECΣAPEIΣ with both C and Σ (!).
