PHRYGIA. Eumeneia. Tiberius, 14-37. (Bronze, 18 mm, 5.29 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrate Valerios Zmertorix. ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ Bare head of Tiberius to right. Rev. OYAΛEPIOΣ ZMEPTOPIΞ - EYMENEΩN Bull butting to right. BMC 35. RPC I 3144. SNG von Aulock 8368. Boldly struck and with a dark green patina. About extremely fine.

The magistrate under whom this coin was struck was from a Celtic family who were prominent citizens of Eumeneia in late Republican and early Imperial times. In c. 41/40 BC, when the city's name had been changed to Fulvia to honour Antony's wife, coins were struck by a certain Zmertorix Philonidos. This person may well have been either the father, or more likely, the grandfather of the present magistrate, Valerios Zmertorix, apparently has a Roman nomen - Valerius - indicating that he had Roman citizenship.
