By 1568, states of northen Europe had been at locked in combat with each other for five years, with the kingdom of Denmark-Norway, allied with the German city-state of Lübeck, arrayed against the Kingdom of Sweden. The belligerents met in Roskilde to negotiate a peace treaty. Though the attendees to the conference agreed to the terms and concessions, Sweden's John III refused. The war dragged on for two more years, becoming known as the Northern Seven Years' War.
