1882 Bompois Sale, with Exceptional Plates
Hoffmann, H. COLLECTION FERDINAND BOMPOIS. MÉDAILLES GRECQUES AUTONOMES. LIVRES DE NUMISMATIQUE ET D'ARCHÉOLOGIE. Paris: Maurice Delestre, 16–21 janvier 1882. 8vo, contemporary brown quarter morocco with mottled paper sides; spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers; original printed paper covers bound in. vii, (1), 200 pages; 2155 + 223 lots; 6 plates of ancient coins engraved by L. Dardel. All but the final book section priced in ink. Some spotting to plates; binding a bit rubbed and worn, but sound; front free endpaper detached. Very good. The very scarce catalogue of an important collection, including a Syracusan dekadrachm and a Demareteion. The engraved plates are particularly well-rendered. Spring quotes Baron de Witte, who wrote that they are "engraved with the greatest of care by Monsieur Léon Dardel, whose talent is known and appreciated by all numismatists." Babelon 226. Clain-Stefanelli 1947. Spring 389 (one of the few catalogues listed by Spring without photographically printed plates).
