USA. The Scarce 1857-O double eagle in XF45
Metal: Gold (0.900). Weight: 33.44 grams. Diametre: 34 mm.
In 1857 the New Orleans mint increased its mintage of Double Eagles to 30,000 pieces which is more than the previous three years.
However, the 1857-O is still an elusive key date for as few as 200 – 250 pieces are remaining in total. It's still difficult to find them on the open market.
This coin is similar to the one in XF40 that we sold in our auction 30 (lot 219) and, because of its rarity, we do not expect finding any further exemplar of this very sought year in the near future.
