A Vidimation of King Erik Menved's Royal Letter to the Citizens of Riga, dated Vordingborg June 13th, 1298. Ink on parchment, sealed by the Chapter of the Church of Riga, the Preacher Brothers' Prior and the Franciskans' guardian in Riga. They confirm that they have seen the Danish King Erik Menved's letter in original, that the letter is valid in every sense, and that the letter is well preserved. Then the text of the King's original letter follows. In it, the King offers his protection to the citizens of Riga and issues trade privileges to the city (cp. Diplomatarium danicum 2:4, 1291-1298 no. 322, Copenhagen 1942). The letter has once been stored in the Archives of the City of Riga; the signum on the reverse ("Caps:a, No. 81") is an indication of that. It has been preserved next to King Erik Menved's original letter, which is still in the City Archives and bears the signum "Caps: a, No. 80". However, since our letter was unpublished until now, and has not been included in the publications of the Danish diplomas (the publication started in the early 1800's), the City Archives in Riga must have sold it or disposed of it more than 200 years ago. The letter has been examined by Ms. Sara Risberg at the Diplomatarium Suecanum department at Riksarkivet (the Swedish National Archives). She has included it under number 41620 in their registry: "Svenskt Diplomatariums huvudkartotek" (SDHK).
