Malichus I, 60-30 BC. Quarter Shekel or Drachm (Silver, 17.5 mm, 3.48 g, 12 h), Petra, L KC = regnal year 26 = 35-34. Diademed head of Malichus I to right. Rev. MLKW MLK' (in Nabataean) Eagle with closed wings standing to left; in field to left, palm branch; to right, date with the Nabataean letter S above and an ? below. Barkay, Silver 1 var. = Hoover & Barkay 15 var (differing reverse legend). DCA 957 var (differing reverse legend). Meshorer, Nabataea -. Schmitt-Korte II 11. Struck from the same obverse die as CNG MBS 81, 2009, 624. Extremely rare and important - probably the second known example of this variety. A bold, attractive and well-centered piece. Obverse struck from a slightly worn die, and with some surface granularity, otherwise, good very fine.
