Richard, in full armor, riding horse galloping to left, holding long spear and pennant with his right hand and with a long, triangular shield over his left side; below, floral ornament. Richard of Salerno came to the East with the First Crusade and ruled Edessa as regent from 1104-1108. He was greatly disliked by his subjects due to ruthless greed; after the death of his cousin Bohemund, ruler of Antioch, he spent the rest of his life in Marash - Germanikeia - where he was killed during the great earthquake of 1114.
