China Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, Shanghai 5 Mexican Dollars 1.3.1897 Pick S367r PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. A gorgeous high grade example of this note which represents the early days of HSBC's business. Even though official Chinese currency at the time was issued in Taels, HSBC issued notes in Mexican Dollars, for use in the busy trading hub of Shanghai. This large format type was printed by Barclay & Fry Limited out of London, and has been kept in an excellent state of preservation with vibrant colors, bold signature and bright paper all intact. This is the sole graded example in remainder format in the PMG Population Report. Additionally there are only four other types of this denomination that show up in that census, revealing the rarity of this note.
