Burma
Mindon gold Mu (2 Pe) CS 1228 (1866) XF Details (Mount Removed) PCGS, Mandalay mint, KM-A20 (same dies), Fr-Unl., Mitch-Unl., Zeno-270867 (same dies), Robinson/Shaw-Unl. Struck from dies made in Calcutta. An intriguing and by all indications extremely rare Burmese denomination, stemming from a period of notable modernization in Burma under King Mindon. Although we have been unable to locate additional records (this denomination unrecorded by Robinson and Shaw, Mitchiner, and Friedberg), a previous Baldwin's listing suggested only 4 specimens are known, of which we are aware of the following: the aforementioned Baldwin's piece (Auction 49, August 2010, Lot 982), a second Baldwin's example (Auction 91, September 2014, Lot 3458), the Standard Catalog of World Coins plate, and the present offering; all seem to have been struck from the same dies with some showing a later die state, a die crack emerging around 3 o'clock on the reverse. Nearly all show heavy circulation or evidence of use in jewelry.
