Hunan. Hunan Official Coin Bureau Liangmianbing ("Two-Faced Cake") Tael (Mace, 7 Chi'en) ND (1906) XF40 PCGS, Kann-952, L&M-416, WS-0927, Cribb-LXXXIII.G.1129. Obverse stamped in a horizontal row and two vertical columns, reading: "Hu Nan Guan Qian Ju Zao" (Made at the Hunan Official Coin Bureau); reverse stamped in three columns, reading (top then bottom, right to left): "Sheng Ping Zu Wen Yi Liang" (Provincial Weight Standard, pure fine silver, one ounce). Fairly scarce as a type, and one that seldom becomes available in any sort of meaningful condition, the series classically suffering from heavy circulation, corrosion, and cleaning. Evenly toned and well-centered, this piece possesses an admiral degree of eye appeal for the assigned grade. Like its neighbors, Hunan suffered from an overabundance of copper coins, as well as a dearth of imperial silver dollars from the capital mint at Changsa, with the consequence that merchants were allowed to send silver to the mint to be struck into circulating cakes around 1906.
