Hupeh. Kuang-hsü 50 Cents ND (1895-1905) MS66 NGC, Ching mint, KM-Y126, L&M-183, Kann-41, WS-0874, Wenchao-578. Simply remarkably preserved--of the well over 600 specimens certified between NGC and PCGS to date, only a single other piece has been graded similarly, by PCGS. This lofty status is quickly confirmed via in-hand inspection, the surfaces wheeling with original lustrous finish brought to completion by a soft overlay of iridescent coloration, dressing the finest features with brilliant eye appeal. Though not required by the serious provincial collector, further confirmation is forthcoming when comparing this piece to those offered in other famed collections: the Wa She Wong specimen a mere XF Details, Norman Jacobs' examples called merely "Good fine or better", and likely even the two pieces in the Goodman Collection (to judge from the catalog photos) being inferior; for comparison, the next finest we have offered, part of the Gruchevsky Collection, certified MS63+ and brought $15,000 in our July 2020 HKINF sale. A connoisseur's coin through-and-through, and unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon.
