China
Yunnan. Republic 1/2 Tael ND (1943-1944) MS64 NGC, KM-X1a (prev. KM-A1.2; under French Indo-China), L&M-434, Kann-941, Lec-322. Struck for use in the French Indo-China opium trade. An extremely impressive survivor of this relic of the opium trade, with the "work-horse" nature of these pieces--created to help maintain a monopoly on the trade by French customs authorities--leading to few preserving such originality as seen here. Though occasionally found in Mint State, the fact that this piece ranks alongside only 31 others, out of nearly 1300 certified, for the finest graded should be extremely telling; coins of the type simply do not come this nice. A thick sheen of cartwheel luster washes fully over both sides while a touch of amber tone graces the central motifs. Beautiful to behold, and a sure target for any connoisseur of quality.
