Republic Yuan Shih-kai Fantasy "Plumed Hat" 10 Cash ND MS61 Red and Brown NGC, cf. KM-Pn5 (for original), CCC-688 (same), CL-MG.62 (same), Woodward-971 (A-1; same), HNS-0124 (same), Duan-3100, Hsu-565, SHI-32. Imitated by Jie Yaodong (Tientsin). An intriguing fantasy type, and one that appears to be quite different from the other 10 Cash issues bearing the bust of Yuan Shih-kai wearing a tall plumed hat; whereas other entries in the series carry entirely concocted die pairings (cf. CCC-693) or designs drawn from other denominations (cf. CCC-692), those seen here actually closely mirror the samples producing by Wang Shao-Hsien and Chu Tsü-fang as official Patterns for the Wuchang mint in the 1910's. Arguably, the style seen here may be even finer than those artists' designs. Indeed the designs are rendered in almost medallic relief against fields that are slightly glassy and filled with mint red color. We would note that this issue was entirely missing from the Q. David Bowers Collection, and appears far nicer than the example plated by Duan.
