Republic Li Yuan-hung Dollar ND (1912) MS66 NGC, Wuchang mint, KM-Y321, L&M-45, Kann-639, Chang-CH233, WS-0090, Wenchao-851 (rarity 1 star). Type without hat. A coin that can only be regarded by even the most serious Chinese collectors as thrilling--a classical type preserved at the very peak of the certified population. Indeed, out of nearly 1500 examples seen between NGC and PCGS to date, only 5 others tie this piece in terms of technical quality. Dressed in mottled peach, steel-blue, and lavender coloration, even close magnification reveals that this blanket of toning conceals next to no distractions, full satin texture predominating throughout with just one small contact mark on the reverse perhaps precluding a finer designation. What is perhaps yet more noteworthy is the general absence of any of the usual doubling in the English legends on the reverse, an almost ubiquitous feature for the type. Review of auction records demonstrates an utter paucity of examples in this quality becoming available in recent years, with the last we handled achieving an incredible $78,000 in our December 2020 HKINF sale, pointing to the fierce competition such specimens generate when they become available.
