Republic silver Pattern "Dragon and Phoenix" Dollar Year 12 (1923) UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Y336, L&M-81, Kann-680, WS-0114, Wenchao-885 (rarity 2 stars). Small characters variety. A classic, if ultimately unadopted, Chinese Pattern, merging a large-size format with incredibly evocative imagery, conceived at the time to serve as the emblems of the national, anti-imperial, Republic. While admittedly cleaned in-line with the grade assigned by PCGS, this has done surprisingly little to hamper the strong visual allure of designs, each element carefully measured and rendered in painstaking detail against the lightly reflective fields surrounding. For the sake of comparison, we offered an AU Details (Cleaning) example of the same subvariety in our July 2020 HKINF sale, which garnered $32,400.
