Hong Kong
British Colony. Victoria Proof Dollar 1866 PR62 NGC, Hong Kong mint, KM10, Prid-1A, Dav-245. Reeded edge. Obverse and reverse dies by Leonard Charles Wyon, Royal mint. A splendid relic from the earliest days of the short-lived Hong Kong mint, which opened on May 7, 1866 and closed just 2 years later in 1868. While such coins met with resistance owing to their inconsistent weight and fears that traditional chopmarking would be treated as a defacement of the Queen's effigy, the Proofs of this design have proven hugely popular with collectors in more recent years--a PR61 bringing $38,400 in our December 2020 HKINF sale. Exhibiting just light champagne toning to its heavily mirrored surfaces, the piece easily secures its near choice designation from NGC. To date, only 7 grade finer across NGC and PCGS combined, a considerable feat in itself, given the likely very small number of surviving specimens in Proof finish.
