Rama IV gold Fuang (1/8 Baht) ND (c. 1856) AU55 PCGS, Bangkok mint, KM-C175 (Rare), Fr-24 (Rare), Zeno-264570 (this coin), LeMay-pp. 89-90, Plate XXI, 4, Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-pg. 150, Plate F08 (Rare). 1.67gm. Large Mongkut (royal crown and throne name of Rama IV) flanked by a scroll of dôk mali (jasmin) to either side / legend Krungt'ep (Bangkok) in two lines. An extremely rare and somewhat enigmatic Thai gold type, largely missing from the auction records of recent years--neither the Goodman nor the Jacobs collections contained an example--with LeMay simply noting (in 1932) that, "[t]he purpose for which these coins were issued is not now known" (pg. 90). Rama IV's reign was, however, known to have been a period of extensive experimentation with issuing a regular circulating gold coinage in Siam, yet while he oversaw production of over 19 different gold types, including a broad series of gold "bullet" coinage, none ever found general acceptance. Krisadaolarn and Mihailovs suggest that although the exact number of pieces struck is unknown, 3-6 are reported to exist, including those in museum collections, and that this coinage immediately preceded the Bannakan "royal seal" issues of Rama IV. The Standard Catalog of World Coins records a single auction result for the type, part of Taisei-Baldwin's-Gillio's March 1996 sale--an exact die match for this piece--which realized $42,000.
