KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Philip III – Antigonos I Monophthalmos. Circa 323-310 BC. AR Obol (9mm, 0.66 g, 12h). In name and types of Alexander III the Great. Uncertain mint in Mesopotamia. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monogram in left field, EY below throne. Price 3793. Toned. VF. Extremely rare, none in Pella, the ANS photofile, nor CoinArchives.
Price references Prokesch-Osten (1) 421, for this issue, but that coin is actually of the type Price 3794, so his source is unknown. The attribution and dating of these issues is highly speculative. The issues of Price 3792–5 are unlikely to be associated to the previous group, Price 3787-91 (which are most likely to be from Karrhai), or the following, Price 3796-3809 (which are likely issues from Tarsos under Antigonos I). As SC is unequivocal in stating that this group is not from the Seleukid period at Karrhai, these must now be assigned to an uncertain mint in Mesopotamia, pending further research.
