Claudius I. Dupondius; Claudius I; 41-54 AD, Branch Mint, 41-2 AD, Dupondius, 12.92g. Von Kaenel pl. 28-9, 1546-57; BM-138, pl. 35.5. Obv: Bare head of Claudius l., no P P in legend. Rx: CERES - [AVGVSTA] on l. and r., SC in exergue, Ceres seated l. holding wheat ears and slanting lighted torch. This coin belongs to "Mint D" striking middle bronzes only that was first distinguished by H.-M. von Kaenel, Münzprägung...des Claudius. In Cohen, BMC, RIC, and Giard\'s Paris catalogue, this and Claudius\' other provincial mints are either included under "Rome" or misclassified as "imitations".This rather unusual coin with an exquisite reverse has a river patina, which means it was buried under the sands of the river for millennia and came out with its original Roman color .
