Macrinus. AE 25; Macrinus; 217-218 AD, Tyre, Phoenicia, AE 25, 12.25g. BM-382 var. Obv: [IMP] CAES MA - CRINVS AV[G] Head laureate r., with long beard. Rx: COINV PHOE - NICES around, NA in exergue, Temple of the Phoenician Koinon seen in perspective to r., with seven frontal and eight side columns, approached by flight of four steps, star in pediment; in r. field, murex shell. As first recognized by Babelon, Perses achéménides (1893), the reverse legend COENV PHOENICES (COINV on our specimen) is evidently a transliteration of the Greek KOINOY FOINIKHC, identifying the temple depicted as that of the Koinon of Phoenicia. The meaning of the letters NA in exergue is unknown. See G.F. Hill in BMC Phoenicia, pp. cxlii and cxliii, note 3.Exceptional architectural reverse. Green patination. F
