SECOND CHINA WAR MEDAL 1857-60. Naming very worn but visible is Stephen McCarthy. 1st Bn. Impressed. Missing suspension and clasps, edge bump and very worn, good.
Pte Stephen McCarthy, regimental no.3440, served with 1st Bn 2nd Regt of Foot (The Queen's Royal Regiment). He was awarded the Second China War Medal with two clasps and it is highly likely that these were for Taku Forts 1860 and Pekin 1860 as the bulk of the regiment were present for these actions. He was discharged in England 5 June 1861.
Stephen McCarthy was born in Ireland in 1835. Sometime after he was discharged from the British Army he immigrated to Queensland and in 1888 married Mary Reen and they had one child born in October 1889. Stephen McCarthy died at Liverpool, NSW in 1905 at the age of 70.
