QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899, (type 3 reverse), - four clasps - Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. 1727 Tpr: J.Knobel. N.S. Wales M.R. Impressed. Very fine.

Together with tribute fob in 9ct gold (7.4g, 41x30mm), 'JK' monogram on obverse, inscribed on reverse 'To/J.Knobel/for Services/rendered to the/Empire/in S.Africa/Henty 6.6.02'.

On his return from South Africa, J.Knobel of Pleasant Hills was given a 'Welcome Home' on Friday 20 June 1902 by the townspeople at the School of Arts and presented with a gold medal. Pleasant Hills is a small village about 26kms west of Henty in the Riverina District of NSW and had a number of prominent families with Wendish German (Lutheran) heritage, one of these being the Knobel family.
