GROUP OF FOUR TO POW: 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. VX27867 J.J.W.Ashwood. All medals impressed. Swing mounted, some light contact marks, otherwise good extremely fine.

Private James John William Ashwood, butcher, age 28, born at Korumburra, Vic; Enl.19Jun1940 at Caulfield, Melbourne, Vic; Emb.17Sep1941; Disemb.05Oct1941 at Singapore and then to Malaya with 2nd Res Motor Transport Coy AASC; MIA 16Feb1942; Previously missing then classified POW 26Oct1943; Died of illness (acute enteritis) whilst POW 01Sep1943; Buried at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand which was the burial site for those POWs who died while building the Burma Railway and constructing the Bridge over the River Kwai.

Note: Died 01Sep1943 but classified POW 26Oct1943. The confusion in the dates is due to lack of information and time lags in recording details. Ashwood had actually been a POW since 16Feb1942 when he went missing in action.
