SICILY. Selinos. AR Didrachm (8.23 gms), ca. 455-440 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Smoothing.
HGC-2, 1224; SNG ANS-709 (same dies). Obverse: Herakles standing right, holding club overhead and preparing to strike the Cretan Bull, standing right in background; Reverse: River god Hypsas standing left, holding branch and phiale, from which he sacrifices over serpent-entwined altar to left; to right, selinon leaf above heron stepping right. A dazzling and artistic type that is also fairly RARE, this specimen features a rather deep cabinet tone. Some rougher areas in he fields have been smoothed at one point, hence the notation. Nevertheless, a great opportunity for a difficult coin.
From the Collection of a Gentleman.
