SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.20 gms), ca. 405 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5. Fine Style.
HGC-2, 1345; SNG ANS-299-300 (same obv. die); Tudeer-96 (V34/R65); BMC-196 (same dies). Unsigned dies in the style of Eukleidas. Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga left; above, crowning Nike flying right; in exergue, dolphin left; Reverse: Head of Arethousa left, with hair flowing upward; four dolphins around. Undoubtedly one of the most attractive examples of this type that one could hope to encounter, this highly pleasing specimen presents a well centered strike on an appealing flan of good metal, all while offering a light gunmetal gray tone and some hints of brilliance remaining in the protected areas.
