SICILY. Siculo-Punic. Uncertain Punic Mint. AR 5 Shekels (Dekadrachm) (36.45 gms), ca. 264-241 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Fine Style.
HGC-2, 1664; Jenkins-Series 6, 450 (O4/R191); Kraay & Hirmer-211. Obverse: Head of Tanit left, wearing grain wreath and single-pendant earring; Reverse: Pegasos flying right; Punic legend (in the land) below. Despite some typical roughness to the surfaces, this type remains an ultimate prize for the more advanced ancient cabinets, as it presents an elegant portrait and rendition of a Pegasos, all while being in the massive five shekels (ten drachms) format. An alluring, old cabinet tone mostly hides the roughness and scattered marks, allowing them to blend in with the rest of the fields quite well. A great opportunity for an incredibly difficult and EXTREMELY RARE coin.
From the Collection of a Gentleman.
