CRETE. Knossos. AR Tetradrachm (14.08 gms), ca. 2nd-1st Centuries B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Scratches, Overstruck, Edge Marks.
Svor-96; BMC-41. Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo left; ΠΟΛ-ΧΟΣ; across field; Reverse: Circular Labyrinth. Despite its noted issues, a VERY RARE example of this later type featuring a circular labyrinth instead of the more commonly encountered square. Compare to a similar specimen that realized a hammer of approximately $40,000 [!] in March 2008. Due to the potential instability of the edges, NGC has elected not to holder this coin and instead issue a photo certificate for its grade.
From the Collection of a Gentleman.
Estimate: $2000 - $4000
