Central American Republic gold 1/2 Escudo 1847 CR-JB MS64+ NGC, San Jose mint, KM13.2, Stickney-C99. An absolutely stunning selection for this penultimate date, and one that should instantly give collectors of Central American coinage reason to stop and pause. As any connoisseur will readily know, locating the minor gold coinage from the period in Mint State, let alone anything approaching gem quality, is typically a far cry--not only is less than 50% of the certified population in circulated quality, but according to NGC, they have seen only a single MS66 ranking finer. While admittedly struck from rusty dies, hardly a trace of post-mint handling can be detected on the piece. For comparison, the nearest specimen we have handled was the ex. Eliasberg piece, certified MS63, which brought $2040 in our September 2017 Long Beach sale.
