Republic gold Counterstamped 1/2 Escudo ND (1849-1857) AU53 NGC, San Jose mint, KM80, Stickney-C431. Displaying Type VII round lion counterstamp with legend HABILITADA PO EL GOBIERNO (AU Standard) on the obverse and reverse of a Central American Republic 1/2 Escudo 1848 CR-JB (cf. KM13). A challenging type in better states of preservation, with only 7 out of 62 certified specimens having been awarded Mint State status. Ranking a full three points above the Pura Vida example, this piece shows a great luster to the stamps with nearly all of the legends around the lions legible. Mislabeled on the holder as a Type VI countermark.
