His father, 'Isa b. Shaykh, was governor of the greater Abbasid province of Armenia 870-882/883, serving as regional governor at the Armenian capital of Dvin during the chaotic period towards the end of his father's governorship. Struck during the reign of the Armenian king Ashot V (856-884), who recognized the Abbasid caliphate as his suzerain. al-Hasan is the only Armenian governor cited on the coins of Armenia during the caliphate of al-Mu'tamid (AH256-279), only on this unique coin.
