Mezzotint Volume on Hedlinger Medals
Fuesli, Jean Gaspard. COLLECTION COMPLETTE DE TOUTES LES MÉDAILLES DU CHÉVALIER JEAN CHARLES HEDLINGUER DESSINÉES PAR JEAN GASPARD FUESLI ET GRAVÉES EN MANIÉRE NOIRE PAR JEAN ELIE HAID. Augsbourg: Chés Jean Jaques Haid et Fils, 1782, Folio [39 by 27.5 cm], later brown half calf, gilt, with marbled sides; spine with six raised bands, ruled and decorated in gilt; red morocco spine label, gilt; marbled endpapers; top page edges gilt. Finely engraved mezzotint frontispiece by Joseph Huber after Johann Elias Haid; finely engraved mezzotint portrait of Hedlinger by Haid; 19, (1), 24 pages; 132 mezzotint engravings of medals on 79 leaves, signed Caspar Füesly after Haid. Untrimmed, and with minimal spotting. Binding rubbed at spine and extremities. Very good, with near fine contents. A very scarce and marvelously illustrated early work on Johann Carl Hedlinger, utilizing the mezzotint technique of engraving. Mezzotints were generally produced on copper plates much like any other engraving, but made use of various shading techniques to create richer tones and accentuate depth. Johann Carl Hedlinger (1691–1771) was a Swiss medalist known mainly for his historical medals, many of which he executed as medalist of the court at Stockholm. Having previously worked as a goldsmith and in the Lucerne, Paris and Stockholm mints, he ended up serving as chief engraver of the Stockholm Mint for much of his career. Dekesel F231. Lipsius 179. Unlisted by Modesti.
