Important Work on 19th-century Decorations
Trost, L.J. DIE RITTER- UND VERDIENST-ORDEN, EHRENZEICHEN UND MEDAILLEN ALLER SOUVERÄNE UND STAATEN SEIT BEGINN DES XIX. JAHRHUNDERTS. Wien und Leipzig: Wilhelm Braunmüller, 1910. Oblong folio [37 by 27.5 cm], original maroon and gray cloth, lettered in white; decorative endpapers. xii, 198, (2) pages; 40 fine plates, most of which are attractively printed in colors and metallic tints. Binding a bit worn, with some wrinkling to endpapers; very good. Laid in is a fascinating group of more than a dozen letters written by Ludwig Hummel, Notgeld- und Briefmarkenhandlung of Munich, to Charles Fisher, a Cleveland, Ohio coin dealer, in the early 1920s, offering various coins and decorations for sale and requesting that he pay in U.S. paper money due to the extremely difficult state of the German economy. Also laid in are various invoices, including ones from Spink and C.F. Zimmermann, as well as a few letters from others on similar topics. Very scarce. The illustrations are very attractively printed. The enclosed correspondence is very interesting and paints a bleak portrait of the difficulties of the trade in post-war Germany. Clain-Stefanelli 15188*. Mulder 198. Purves 43: "it is more completely illustrated and comprehensive than any earlier work." Suetens 87: "Toujours l'ouvrage le plus consulté. Se distingue par son exactitude, sa composition maniable et sa sûreté."
