Near Complete Hess-Leu Ancient Coin Sales
Hess AG, Adolph, and Bank Leu & Co. AUCTION SALES. Seventeen well-illustrated auction catalogues, Zürich, 1954–1971. Sales present include Sales 1–3, 7, 9, 11, 15, 17, 19, 21, 22, 24, 28, 36, 41, 45 and 49 [with most of the intervening numbers not focusing on ancient coins]. 4to, original pictorial card covers; the first four catalogues are bound in one volume in maroon cloth. Nearly all include prices realized lists or hand-pricing, with a number bearing some annotations. Very good or better. An important series of catalogues, including the highly important ESR catalogue of the collection of Erich von Schulthess-Rechberg. All of the sales here present are included by Spring as being significant for ancient coins (the present offering lacks only one sale included by him). The ESR catalogue was not only significant for its content, but for its cataloguing, which utilized a new format and generous use of illustrations. Spring 347–359 and 361–364.
