Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1839, first young head left, W.W. raised on truncation for engraver William Wyon, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms within laurel wreath, emblems below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINIA FID: DEF:, edge milled, 7.99g (Bentley 400; Marsh 23 R2; S.3852). Some repair to obverse, otherwise good very fine, one of Victoria's rarest Sovereign dates.

Calendar year mintage 503,695

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse "Queen of the Britain's, Defender of the Faith."

This second-year date is significantly rarer than the popular 1838 Sovereign. Presumably, collectors at the time put aside the 1838 coins, but the following year of 1839 saw the release of Victoria's proof set and so many bought the 1839 proof Sovereign instead meaning they did not need to save their currency pieces. As such, 1839 currency Sovereigns are more seldom seen than 1838.
