Elizabeth II (1952-), cupro-nickel Florin, 1967, with extra curl of hair at nape of neck, young laureate head right, diagonal line connecting lowest hair curl to rear of neck, M.G. incuse at centre of truncation for designer Mary Gillick, legend and beaded border surrounding, +ELIZABETH. II. DEI. GRATIA. REGINA, rev. English rose at centre, surrounded by border of leeks thistles and shamrocks, initials E.F and C.T either side of lowest shamrock for designers Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas, legend denomination and date surrounding interspaced with thistle heads from the inner border, FID: DEF: TWO SHILLINGS 1967, edge milled, 11.38g (Bull cf.4433; ESC 968U; S.4146). Toned extremely fine and very rare with this obscure variety that was first reported in 1968 but has since been lost to history.

This variety was first noticed in 1968 and the consignor tells us was reported in Coin Monthly during that year. There are so far only six known of this variety which may well be the result of an unfinished die at the nape of the neck area, much reminiscent of the 1844 Victoria Crowns with the hair unfinished below the tie knot where a "table" of metal persists in the terminal strands. A highly unusual variety and one in need of publishing for the new generation of collectors.
