SICILY. Katane. Circa 405-403/2 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.20 g, 10 h), in the style of Eukleidas. KATAN-A-IΩN Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. KATANAIΩN Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, fish to left. Gillet 90 (same dies). Gulbenkian 194 (same dies). Jameson 549 (this coin). Rizzo pl. XIV, 9 (same dies). SNG ANS 1261 (same dies). A wonderful piece of the very finest Classical style, lightly toned and with a splendid old pedigree. The reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.


From the collection of Regierungsrat Dr. iur. Hans Krähenbühl, privately acquired from Bank Leu on 24 November 1976 (with a photocopy of the original invoice enclosed), ex Leu 13, 29-30 April 1975, 48, and from the collections of R. Jameson (1861-1942) and Fürst Chachowsky, Egger XX, 7 January 1908, 32.

This is the earliest Katanian tetradrachm showing Apollo as the obverse type, a masterpiece of the very finest Classical style likely crafted by the celebrated Eukleidas.
