SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.33 g, 1 h), circa 475-470. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 248 (V112/R169). SNG ANS 85 (same dies). Beautifully toned. Struck from the usual somewhat worn dies and with minor flan faults on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.


From the collection of Regierungsrat Dr. iur. Hans Krähenbühl, privately acquired from Münzen & Medaillen AG on 16 March 1963 (with a photocopy of the original invoice enclosed).
