Forces of Galba in Spain. In the name of Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.15 g, 6 h), uncertain mint in Spain. Group A.III, 3 April-2nd half of June 68. AVGVSTVS DIVI F Laureate head of Augustus to right. Rev. IMP XII Bull butting to left, head facing. BMC 51. CG 157.1 (this coin). Cohen 159 (Augustan prototype). Martin A 18 and pl. 11, A 18 W = Nicolas A15 and pl. XXI, A15 V (same dies). RIC 100. Extremely rare, one of just four known examples. Nicely toned and very well centered, a lovely coin. A few light scratches, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, privately acquired from Martina Dieterle on 27 November 2013.

Clearly derived from Augustus' well-known bull denarii from Lugdunum, this is a particularly charming civil war imitation, with a portrait more reminiscent of Claudius than of the first princeps.
