MYSIA. Lampsakos. Circa 100-70 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.36 g, 1 h), Artemidoros, son of Kallistratos, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. ΛΑΜΨΑ-ΚΗΝΩΝ / ΑΡΤEMIΔΩΡΟΥ ΤΟΥ / ΚΑΛΛΙΣΤΡΑΤΟΥ Priapos standing right, holding kantharos in his right hand and thyrsos over his left shoulder; in inner left field, monogram; in inner right field, crown of Isis. Baldwin, Lampsakos -. A. Ellis-Evans: The Late Hellenistic Tetradrachms of Parion and Lampsakos, in: AJN 32 (2020), -. Gaebler -. SNG Paris -. SNG von Aulock -. Apparently unpublished and unique. A new type in the series and hence of great interest. Somewhat double struck and with a flan crack, otherwise, good very fine.
The appearance of this issue with new types is quite exciting. We do not know if it was struck simultaneously with the Priapos series or whether it preceded it, but it is worth noting that the reverse figure is clearly wearing a long, wavy beard, reminiscent of Priapos on lot 2133 above, and hence likely represents Dionysos' son, rather than Dionysos himself.
