ARABIA, Eastern. Uncertain, circa 3rd century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.94 g, 9 h), imitating Alexander 'the Great' (336-323 BCE). Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. Zeus/Shams seated left on low throne with back, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, bow; to right, blundered Greek legend. CCK 138 (this coin). Very rare. Very fine.

From the collection of Ambassador Martin Huth.

This lovely Arabian imitation was modelled after Price 3139, a tetradrachm of Alexander 'the Great' struck in circa 332/1-323 BCE under Nikokreon, the king of Salamis on Cyprus.
