Commodus. Denarius; Commodus; 177-192 AD, Denarius, Rome, 185 AD, 2.57g. BM-151 note, C-472 (Paris), RIC-101 var. Obv: COMM ANT - AVG P BRIT Head laureate r. Rx: P M TR P X - IMP VII - COS IIII P P Jupiter seated l. holding Victory and spear (point downwards). Rare: only three specimens in Reka Devnia hoard, this variant with Jupiter holding Victory instead of thunderbolt not in BM by 1968. Perhaps by engraver\'s error, Jupiter\'s expected scepter is rendered as a spear with point downwards on our specimen. From the Samuel Puchala Collection of Denarii of Commodus. EF
