Septimius Severus. AE 26; Septimius Severus; 193-211 AD, Mopsus, Cilicia, Year B?C = 262 = 194/5 AD, AE 26, 13.89g. SNG Paris-1983 (same dies). Obv: AVT KAI [?] C? - ? - C?[V?]P?C ??P Emperor togate, bare-headed, with forked beard, standing l., holding in r. hand Victory who is about to crown him and in l. hand roll. Rx: A?PI - MO?E on r., date ET B?C on l., Laureate, draped bust of Zeus r. Very rare, possibly only the third recorded specimen. In his 1963 article on the coinage of Mopsus, Von Aulock knew only two specimens of this coin, one in Paris (now SNG-1983) and the other in the Apostolo Zeno collection at the St. Florian monastery in Austria, a collection that was dispersed in two Dorotheum auction catalogues of 1955 and 1956, though neither of those catalogues seems to describe or illustrate any Roman provincial bronze coins. This coin is so unusual and exquisite, we thought it might be a Renaissance issue but it is an exceptional Greek colonial. Obverse struck in high relief. EF
