The Redones were a Gallic tribe whose territory lay in the eastern part of the Armorican peninsula (modern Brittany) during the Roman period. They submitted to Julius Caesar's legions in 57 BC along with neighbouring tribes (De Bello Gallico 2.34), and had forces at the Battle of Alesia in 52 BC, where a Roman victory marked the end of Gallic independence. Their name means 'chariot-drivers' or 'horse-riders', stemming from the Celtic root 'red-' - 'to ride'. Indeed, horses are an enduring symbol on their distinctive coinage, which they began to issue in the early 1st century BC following Greco-Roman practices.
