SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.08 g, 2 h), struck under Gelon I, 484-483. Male charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound with a taenia, wearing two necklaces, one simple and one of pearls; around, four dolphins swimming to left. Boehringer 46 (V27/R30). Gillet 529 (same reverse die). Jameson 738 (same dies). Rizzo pl. 34, 13. SNG ANS 10 (same dies). Attractively toned and carefully centered on a broad flan. Very fine.
