CELTIC, Lower Danube. Imitations of Thasos. Late 2nd-1st centuries BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 33 mm, 16.63 g, 1 h). Highly debased and stylized head of a young Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath the leaves of which are formed by opposed Λs and Vs. Rev. Legend devolved to double rows of pellets Stylized figure of Herakles standing facing, holding a "club" with his right hand and a long staff with V-shaped lines attached to his leg in his left; above to right, large annulet. Cf. Lukanc Group VII, 1st and 2nd sub-groups, 1655-1816. OTA Class V/B (Punktelegende). Lightly toned and well-centered, and with a charmingly "lazy" head of Dionysos, which almost looks as if it is walking on two legs! About extremely fine.

From the D. A. Collection, USA.
