Fatimid, al-Hakim (386-411h), dinar, al-Mahdiya 402h, 4.21g (cf Nicol 1229 [dated 401h and with similar legends]), very fine and apparently unpublished. The coin which Nicol tentatively assigned to this mint and date (Nicol 1230, 'no data, uncertain date) evidently bore legends arranged in two concentric bands on each side, as his Type O1. The present coin demonstrates that Type M1, introduced during 401h, was in fact also used for coins struck in the following year. It is suggestive that all other al-Mahdiya gold with legends as Type O1 consists of quarter-dinars struck between 387 and 392h, and it may well be that the specimen cited as Nicol 1230 was misidentified.
