*Italy, After the Antique (second half of 15th century), Achilles overcoming Troilus, bronze oval plaquette, 37.7 x 51.4mm (Molinier 35; Bange 159; Kress 260; Scaglia I.19; Warren, Ashmolean, 356), very fine old cast. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Mark Wilchusky. The cast reproduces an antique sardonyx cameo in the Earl of Yarborough's collection which was formerly in the collection of Cardinal Giovanni Grimani (died 1593). The earliest Renaissance depiction of the scene appears to be in one of the frescos of the Life of St. Christopher by Ansuino da Forli in the Ovetari Chapel in Padua (1448-57). The damaged edge of the original cameo is reproduced on the plaquette above the head of Achilles and its composition may be related to the decoration of the cuirass on the bronze statue of Germanicus in the Archaeological Museum in Perugia.
